Day 4, 2nd Grade

Samantha started the 2nd grade at her new school, Latexo Elementary, Monday. She had been a little apprehensive about changing schools, despite our repeated reassurances. She woke fairly easy, despite the earlier time, her happy demeanor intact. She'd already decided what she would wear, a task new to her preschool routine. Her previous school required uniforms. The only considerations were short sleeves or long, scooter skirt or pants. She'd decided on a denim scooter skirt, ladybug shirt and sparkly hot pink shoes. She looked so cute! We had to force her to eat, as usual. I left for work just before she was to leave.

I talked with Jeff later in the morning. He said that as soon as the garage door was lowered she asked if they could walk fast. Why? Because I need to go to the bathroom! Garage door up, back into the house, to the bathroom and then off to school, again. As they arrived, Grayson, her bestest friend, was getting out of her car. The two of them walked in together as if they'd done it many times before.

That evening Samantha was full of information that she'd learned that day. The classroom rules, no pink or blue hair, shorts under dresses or skirts, and the explanation of the green, yellow, red behavior system. She'd had a good day and was eager to return.

Now that she's completed four days now, she continues to be excited about school. I'm amazed that my baby girl is in the second grade. She's grown so much this summer, all legs, and her face is that of a young girl. It makes me want to freeze time and just study her or at least slow it down. It seems like just the other day she was being placed in my arms for the first time. Ahhhh.
